Either let Windows manage it, or set it to 1.5 x times the amount of
installed RAM, or a fixed value between 768 and 1024 MB.

I have 262 memory is that the same so I should set it at 128?

262? What an odd number. But 262 times 1.5 is 393. I'd set it to a
fixed value of 768 MB and see how it goes then. If not satisfied after
a week, try 1024.

_First_, go into Safe Mode (after turning the computer on, start
hitting F8 repeatedly until it gives you the option) and defragment
your harddrive.

I was wrong it's 224 mb of ram I'm new to all of this is it hard to change
it I only had this computer a week and not use to XP and don't want to mess
it up

Some applications incorrectly report the size of the
Pagefile(virtual memory) Your RAM will be 256MB it has to
be. There isn't any such thing as a 224MB stick. I highly
recommend you leave the setting at "system managed size"
until you get to know a little more. Have fun.

However, there are on-board video chips that steal memory which won't
be reported as system RAM then. In this case, 32 MB makes perfectly
sense.

Stealing RAM does not change the charactersitics of RAM.
256MB of RAM is 256MB regardless of how it is parsed out.
If you have a benchmarking tool that is incorrectly
reporting RAM then you need a new tool. Have fun.

Right; but if you have 256 megs of RAM installed, and the video chip
utilizes 32 of these, then the properties under My Computer will only
report 224 megs.
