Since installing a new hard drive, I am getting many notifications of
virtual memory being low and computer adding more. An icon then appears on
the desktop. I am not using a lot of memory in what I am doing so do not
understand why I get these messages. Any explanation?? This has only
happened since the new hard drive installation.

First thing I would check is what the virtual memory
settings are currently.
Start - Control Panel - System Settings
Advanced - Performance Settings - Advanced - Change
button.
The settings within should be set to 1.5 times the amount
of physical memory you have - for the minimum and maximum
values. This creates a stable virtual memory space, with
enough room to page effectively.
Please let me know if this does not make sense.

Hi, Coodi.

Go to System Properties | Advanced | Performance Settings | Advanced |
Virtual Memory | Change. Use this window to choose which volume to use for
your paging file, and how big it should be. My preference is to pick the
volume to be used (preferably on a different physical drive from the OS) and
then pick System managed size for this volume and No paging file for all the
others. Don't forget to click the Set button before OKing your way out and
rebooting.

Whatever settings you may have had here before probably didn't fit anymore
after you installed the new HD. If you didn't change them manually, WinXP
may have felt obliged to change them for you.
