when i turn on my computer, i get a message saying my
virtual memory is low or i'm missing a paging file. i've
spoken with the manufacturer and they told me to re-load
xp again. i do not wish to do that since i have so many
files on my computer. this was after we tried to change
the range of memory in the advance tab in the system
properties. has anyone encountered this problem and if so
how was it resolved

First, backup your HD. Or, at least, the data files that
matter most. Don't pretend that you have valuable data unless
you backup.

If you have a good, verified, backup, then the risk of lost
data due to reloading XP is much less, so you can then boot
from your XP CD and do a repair -- that should cure any XP
file corruption without blowing away any data files.

Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance -Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory -Change button, and click on hollow circle before System Managed size and OK etc. I would be inclined not to tinker with other settings.
