I suspect that you don't have 2.5 gig of ram but instead have 2.5 gig of
free disk space. What numbers are in the min and max now? The general rule
is setting page file to 1 1/2 times the RAM in the system. However I would
always want RAM + virtual memory to be > 512 meg. I would put in 384 as the
min and 1000 as the max.

Hi, Teri.

First, what Windows version are you using? I assume Win2K, since win2000 is
in the name of this newsgroup, but the virtual memory question arises in
many versions and, yes, we do get questions about other versions in this NG.

Second, have you read MVP Alex Nichols' article on virtual memory? See:
Virtual Memory in Windows XP
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.php

Yes, it's specifically for WinXP, but Win2K is so similar that everything in
there - except the user interface - is the same. In my WinXP, I simply pick
the HD I want to use and set it to System Managed Size. Then I forget about
virtual memory and just let WinXP handle it. ;<)

Hi, again, Teri.

Just press Win+Break and the System Properties page will pop up on your
screen. Under the Computer heading, it should tell you which CPU you have,
and how much RAM.

By Win+Break, I mean to hold down the Windows logo key (like a shift key)
while you press the Pause/Break key.

Start task manager (hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and pick it)

Click on performance tab.

Look at Total Physical Memory

This can also be a sign of spyware running on your PC consuming
resources.

Download and use the free programs spybot and adaware. yes I recommend
two programs because they each seem to find something different.

You should also update your Antivirus software and run a scan

from a cold start your computer will list how much memory you hav
physically ie. how much RAM you have
