Virtual memory has nothing to do with RAM.

right-click My Computer / Properties / Advanced /
Performance (I can't remember the exact tab / button in
XP, but in this area)

Increase your Paging file size (you have a minimum & a
maximum setting). I would set the maximum at 512. That
should be plenty.

I'm a little confused, however .. your hard drive size ..
it's only 56MB ??? ... not very big for today's
applications & programs.

Virtual memory has nothing to do with RAM? Of course it does -- virtual memory is used to supplement physical memory (RAM). When there is not enough physical memory available for the requests that are being made for it, Windows starts writing out to the pagefile on the hard drive, and the it what virtual memory is. Your advice to set a 512 MB maximum for the pagefile is not a good recommendation at all, and could cause problems in some situations. There is no advantage at all to setting a maximum pagefile size, it should be set for the maximum size available on that drive. A recommendation on minimum pagefile size can only be made by monitoring that specific computer over a period of time to find out typical pagefile usage.
