My computer is saying "Virtual memory too low"
i recently downloaded AVG and uninstalled Norton and now i am getting this
popup almost every hour!
What is Virtual memory?
AVG is supposed to take up less space than Norton, so why would this pop up
now?
How do i fix this?
Any help would be great!

Virtual memory is disk space that is pooled or added to Physical RAM
to make the system capable of accessing/mapping more address space
than just by using physical RAM alone.

Norton doesn't uninstall itself very well. It's also possible that removing
the Norton infestation caused the Pagefile size to be incorrectly set. The
Pagefile ( Pagefile.Sys ) is the block of disk space used to extend RAM.
The proper size is dependant on how much RAM your computer has. It
should equal be at a minimum the same size as physical RAM.

You can monitor/adjust the Pagefile with System Properties, Advanced
(TAB), Performance - Settings button.

Your hard drive may be running low on disk space. Open Windows Explorer and
right click on the drive icon (usually C:) and click on the Properties
option. If the amount of free space displayed in the Properties window is
less than 10 percent of the total drive/partition size,
then low disk space is most likely the cause.

To fix this you can click on the 'Disk Cleanup' located near the bottom
right of the Properties Window. In the 'Disk Cleanup' window place check
marks in the boxes that show a lot of drive space being consumed, typically
'Temporary Internet Files', 'Recycle Bin', and 'Temporary Files'.

Also if you manually set the size of the pagefile you may need to increase
it.
Click Start, and then select/click the Control Panel option.
Next click on the 'System' icon..
In the 'System Properties' windows click on the 'Advanced tab'.
Locate the box titled 'Performance' and click on the 'Settings' button
In the 'Performance Options' select the 'Advanced' tab.
Near the bottom you will see a box labeled 'Virtual Memory', click on the
'Change' button.
In the 'Under Drive [Volume Label]' column, select the drive that contains
the paging
file that you want to change the size or to create a page file.
In the 'Paging file size for selected drive' box , click to select the
'System managed size' check box (this is the recommended default), and then
click Set.
If you decide to choose the 'Custom size' option,
then make certain that the 'Initial size' and 'Maximum size' values are at
least 1.5 times the actual
amount of ram memory in your PC as a starting point.
Click the OK button 3 times to exit.

You will need to 'Restart' the computer for the changes to take effect.

Additionally, it would be worth while to check if Norton is removed
completely from your operating system.
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool and try to get a refund:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003
products and Norton 360 from your computer.

While Norton's removal tool usually gets the job done, you may also want to
go to:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
and download a copy of winsockxpfix just in case. Rarely, the removal of
NIS breakes the networking components in XP to the point where internet
access is impossible. This little utility will fix it back up.

If the Norton removal tool doesn't work satisfactory use this:
Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Remove unwanted programs and traces easily
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
and/or
RegSeeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
RegSeeker will remove all associated detritus (registry keys, files and
folders) from any application. I found this application user friendly and
very effective but suggest *not* to use the 'Clean the Registry' option.
Click onto 'Find in registry' and in the 'Search for' box type *Norton*;
The pertinent registry keys can then be safely deleted (just in case,
ensure that the 'Backup before deletion' is checked). Repeat the task by
typing in the Search for' box *Symantec*. You can then go on search and
remove associated files as well.
Then use NTREGOPT to compact the registry; Follow instructions.
