I have set up my PC to dual boot between Vista Home Premuim (default) and XP
Pro. I would like to set up so that I can switch between the two without
rebooting and Virtual Machime software has been suggested but I would like to
avoid reinstalling the operatimg systems if possible. Can anyone suggest a
method please

Normally you'd just install Virtual Machine in your main operating system...
then install the "guest" OS within it.

Not sure why you'd want to do that with both XP and Vista...
I'd think you'd be better off dual booting

What programs do you plan to run within this virtual machine?

You have to install Windows XP in a new virtual machine.

Thanks for the reply Philo - I want to be able to switch almost at will
because I have three hardware items working perfectly under XP that give
trouble under Vista (not picked up by the Vista Upgrade Advisor) and the
manufacturers dont seem willing to produce viable vista drivers - I dont want
to change perfectly good hardware - I thought we were supposed to help the
environment by reducing electrical waste

In which case, VirtualPC will almost certainly be of no use to you...

Apart from the processor, VirtualPC emulates all hardware...

there is a method to image your drive and then install that image into vpc.
maybe someone else can instruct on how.
with your xp hardware problem, would suggest installing vpc on xp and then using vpc for vista.

Not directly related, but got me to thinking out loud. Any reason why I couldn't set up XP and Vista in a dual-boot configuration. Then in VPC in XP, virtualize other OS's (Ubuntu, Mac for example). In essence leaving Vista completely out of the loop in terms of virtualization. But still having the option to boot to it.

I don't know about running Mac in a virtual machine would work...
but running Linux or other versions of Windows should be fine

It has been *alleged* in this newsgroup that it is possible to install
MacOSX on a virtual machine...
