I have a proprietary I.E.-based app that apparently needs
MS VM build 3805 in order to work correctly. I've seen the
KB articles and security bulletins that say that it was a
critical security update to go from 3805 to 3809 last
December and from 3809 to 3810 this past April or May.
Realistically, what is my exposure to serious compromise if
I replace the 3810 in my WinXPpro SP1 with 3805 (the
download is available from the vendor of my app).

I think he's saying that his proprietary app won't work with the update.
The OP should get on the case of the maker of the proprietary app to be
sure their app works with updated IE because expecting a client to run
IE unpatched is Right Out. If the app maker won't help, then find
another app!

Not very much. But usually where these things say 'needs build so and
so' they mean 'at least build so and so' - I would not have expected
anything to insist specifically on 3805

I was surprised too, but when I told the vendor's tech support that I
had 3810, they said install 3805 instead. If I d/l the 3805 file, can
I just install over the existing 3810, or do I have to uninstall
something first (what/how)? And in response to Malke's comment, my
last email to the vendor's tech support requested escalation and was
cc'd to its VP of Technology. So far, no response -- which I hope
means that someone's actually looking into this, rather than ignoring
me. Unfortunately, this is one of those situations where, as a member
of an organizaton, I have to use the app that the organization chose.
I can suggest changes, but I can't force them.

First get your download of 3805 - there are various sites offering MS
Java downloads, but I think most have moved to 3809. Or ask the company
providing the program - if they require such a specific version they
would need to have it available.

Then you will have to delete some files manually - This list may overdo
it, but they would get replaced so you might as well delete the lot

All from C:\Windows\System32

jdbgmgr.exe
Jview.exe
WJview.exe
javart.dll
javacypt.dll
javaee.dll
javaprxy.dll
msjava.dll

If a dll should say it can't be deleted, rename it with a different
extension instead and reboot so it won't get loaded

Then it will be clear to run the download to install
