Virtual contact list folders and composing Distribution Lists

Outlook 2003 permits multiple personal contact lists, but they work by being
'moved' from the main list, Contacts. The tool we need is to have 'virtual
folders' that are really views into the master 'main' Contact list. So a
contact can be multiply represented in various groups, but stored and updated
in only one place. For this reason, I have long used Categories for my one
list, and filtered as required.

It's a pity that a category filter isn't supplied with the Distribution List
maintenance dialog, and that 'drag-and-drop' from a filtered selection to
such a distribution list doesn't work.

One must wonder why you even need a DL if you are using Categories.

Different benefits for different tasks.
When browsing to identify a contact from within a group, Category is useful
as a view selector.
But it's not convenient to "send to all" from such a view.
A distribution list is useful for entry on the "To:" subject line of a mail
composition window. Failing that, if there were a Category filter for the
Address Book name finder I'd be happy enough.

As Brian says, it's pretty darn easy to send to a Category, and far more
reliable than using a DL.
