viewing slides on the side

On the left hand side there is a view from where I can preview slides and
browse through them in order, whilst having the current slide showing on the
screen.

How do I get the display on the left hand side (slide browser) within the
normal view?

Click View > Normal (Restore Pane).
Is that what you are referring to?

If you lost the left hand slides browser in normal view, click View - Normal
(Restore Panel) in PowerPoint 2003, or click View - Noraml button in ribbon
tab in PowerPoint 2007.
