I have inserted JPEG's into a number of slides and
desperately need to figure out how to enable the slide
number to show through the JPEG which takes up the entire
slide. Suggestions?

Blair,

Create a text box on your 1st slide

Then
Insert menu
"slide number"

Then make the text / color / font how you want it.

Then Copy and paste the text box onto all your slides.

If your pictures are fullscreen, you can insert them on individual slides as
a background (Format | Background) - anything above the background will be
visible.

You might need to add a new text box with the slide number as text atop
the JPG and format it to match the existing slide number, then copy it
to the other slides where it's needed and edit the text to match the
slide number.

But first, try this:

- Go to a slide where you've inserted a JPG
- Choose Format, Background
- Click the dropdown box where the current b/g color appears and choose
Fill Effects
- Click the tab labeled "Picture" then click Select Picture and choose
the JPG
- OK your way back to reality

Since the picture is now on the background, the slide number will
appear above it.

Since the pictures will be sized to fill the slide, you'll want to be
certain that they're already in the same proportion as your slide size,
else the pictures will get distorted.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint doesn't provide the functionality that you are looking for
(Slide number placeholder on slide master to display in front of items
inserted into slides <bring ALL THE WAY to front>) although there are
workarounds (which others have already suggested).

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide this kind of functionality, don't forget to send your
feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
