Viewing Report set for an off-line network printer

Is there any way to edit a report which uses an off-line network printer?

When I click on the "Design" button, a box comes up saying my
(network) printer is not available. It will not open the report
unless I select another printer.

I can edit a report using a local printer that is off-line. Why not one
using a network printer that is off-line?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have a driver for that printer installed on your PC
and its name is identical to how it named on the other
computer(s), you should be able to edit it just fine.

Unless you are trying to print, the status of the printer
does not matter - the important thing is that Access can
talk to the appropriate printer driver (not the actual
printer) and most importantly that it recognizes the
printer driver by the correct name.

Only if I select that printer, which defeats the purpose and is
not a solution.

Again, this seems like a deficiency of Access or Windows
networking since non-network printers don't have to be on-line
to edit reports that use them.

The appropriate printer driver is installed. Obviously, network
printers are handled differently than local printers. Maybe there is
some information that is not installed with the driver so that Access
needs network printers on-line for editing reports that use them.

Thanks for replying.

Okay, let me guess, the printer that is off-line to you is
the default printer for the other PC's, and the report was
not created to go to a Specified printer but rather to use
the default?

Try defining the report to Use Specifiic Printer (Page
Setup options), and things may work okay. At least until
somebody else needs to use the report and does not have
the right printer driver installed or it uses a different
printer name...

Yes, I too would call it a deficiency in Access, but like
the 22" page limit referenced in another post today, there
are some technical reasons for why Access does things that
way.

I've had cases where two people use the same type of
printer but each used a different network printer name,
and any time one of them edited the report after the other
had, the margin settings would disappear. That was really
a pain.

No, Its set to use a specific printer on the other PC.

For some reason, a network printer has to be on-line
to edit a report that uses it, but a local printer does not.

I'm not sure if its a deficiency of Access or the network
part of Windows.

Thanks for the idea though.
