Hi
I am using office 2003. When I am in Normal View I don't
get to see what page number I am on, or how many pages
there are in my document. 'Page' is greyed out. Page
numbers only appear after I have gone to Print Preview.
When I return to Normal, page numbers appear.
Should Word 2003 operate like this, or is it a problem?
Does anyone know how to resolve this (apart from having
to go to print preview every time I open a document?)
Thanks
Steve

Normal View is not a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get). It is merely
the text on the pages (no headers/footers/graphics/etc.). You should,
however, still be able to see the page of page data in your Status Bar
towards the bottom left. If it is not visible, click "Tools", "Options" and
on the "View" TAB place a check by "Status bar".

Hi
Thanks for your reply. Although the status bar is visible
in normal view, the 'Page' at the bottom left of the
status bar is greyed out. As I said, the Page no. only
becomes visible after selecting Print Preview and then
returning to Normal view.
I think that it's a peculiarity of Word 2003 that will be
resolved in the first service pack. Since posting my
message, I have noticed that Word 2003 also has problems
keeping 'up to date' with page number totals (e.g. 26/79)
in long documents. For example, I may delete a few pages
and then add a few more. It is only when I go to Print
Preview and then return to Normal View that the page
number total on the bottom left of the status bar
corrects itself.
Regards
Steve

This is not a peculiarity of Word 2003, but of your installation. Start Word
in its safe mode with the command winword/a and see if that clears the
problem. If it does, and the problem returns when you start Word normally,
chances are you have some minor corruption in normal.dot or you have an
add-in that is misbehaving. Switching to print preview, effectively updates
the fields in the document.

Hi Steve

Do you have the 'background pagination' option checked in Tools > Options >
General?

In Word 2002, not allowing Normal view to do background pagination greys out
the line and column information (though not, odly enough, the page number,
even though wrong).

IME, leaving backround repagination disabled, eventually you'll lose the
page number on the status bar (once Word realizes it has lost track).
