I have a bunch of old movies on VHS that I successfully transferred to movie
maker, edited and burned on CD/DVD I can view on computer just fine but
regardless of format or type of cd +/- or dvd +/- I cannot get my dvd player
to recognise and play on my TV. Any suggestions? Thanks....... els

How did you burn the movie file? What is the file format on the cd/dvd? It
looks like you just burned the file and did not author a VCD or DVD. You must
use third party authoring software (MyDVD, Ulead, Nero etc) to 'create' a VCD
or DVD. You just can't use file burning software to put the file on a disk
and expect the standalone player to read the file.

Steve, thanks for responding, I first used pinnicle then purchased "nero"
with the same results so obviously I am doing something incorrectly because
when I insert the disc into the player I get the "no disc" msg. I followed
the nero manual during the process I selected ntsc however I agree the
formatting is likely where my problem lies.

I don't use Nero, but from what i've read I think you should be using Nero
Vision Express to make a DVD. Pop one of the disks in the drive and using
explorer see what format the file is. If you get a Media Player icon then its
definite you only burned the file. The disk needs to be 'authored' to be
viewable in a standalone player. Its a common mistake seen on this board.

I WENT THROUGH MANY DISCS.USING STUDIO 9. WINDOWS.ETC. FINALLY I USED NERO
EXPRESS AND IT HAS A BUILT IN DECODER. AND NOW IM ABLE TO PLAY ON DVD PLAYER
AND WATCH IT ON TV. I USED DVD+R

Steve, This is helpful, can I assume by "authoring" you are refering to a
step in the creation process when I am acquiring and editing the video? when
I look at the finished dvd in explorer the only reference I see is "file
cdfs". is this correct?

sonnymmm, thanks for your response, I too tried studio 9 with the same
problem, now that I have these dvd's that will play on ms media player can I
go back and reacquire those in nero and run through the edit process to make
a new dvd that will work on my dvd player and if so is the "decoder you
mentioned automatic or part of the format selection I must make. Thanks again

Authoring would indeed be another step in the process but it is AFTER
editing the video.
Once you are done editing and then saving the video you need to import it
into a "DVD authoring program" since you have Nero I presume, unless you are
only using the trial download, that you also have Nero Vision Express. That
would be an authoring program. Import your video(s) into NVE and create any
menu(s) you want on your DVD and then burn. The program will convert and
create all the necessary files and burn your DVD which will then be playable
in your home DVD player.

Studio9 is more of a joke than anything. It is a simple program bundled with
many DVD writers because it is cheap. Nero Vision Express is only one of
many options available that make Studio9 look like the toy that it is. if
you already have Nero and NVE then obviously spending more money is not
necessary but if you don't then I have a list of DVD authoring programs with
links for downloading their free trials on my website in the "DVD Programs"
section if your interested in your alternatives.
