Viewing on DVD player

I made my first Movie maker DVD yesterday and proudly took it for family
viewing on the DVD player and it declared it was not a recognised format.
Have I gone to loads of time,trouble and expense for the the DVD's only to
be shown on the computer? Is there any other software that is compatible
with home DVD players? Or it it our DVD player? Any suggestions gratefully
received.
