Viewing NIC properties Fails - Desktop dissappears completely...

When I try to view the properties for the NIC installed in a Win2K server,
the properties box tries to open then stalls, then the entire screen goes
blank, including the desktop, then the standard desktop re-appears after a
few seconds.

I've tried re-applying service pack 4, tried adding a new nic in addition to
the one already installed, same problem.

If I were to need to make any changes to the settings, I am unable to do so.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That happens with my Intel (with the latest drivers) gigabit NICs on WIN2K3
& XP systems, the properties open and close, the desktop disappears and
then reappears. This occurs when I right-click on the Properties/Configure
in the Network Connections folder, however, if I get the properties from
Device Manager it doesn't happen. Do you have Intel NICs? Have you
contacted the NIC vendor and mentioned the problem to them?

I'm afraid I can't give you a solution and I'm not that bothered as I'm
moving all my systems to Linux shortly.

Bill,

I haven't notified Intel regarding the issue. Good thought.

As far as viewing the properties from Device Manager, totally different.
Doesn't help me as it doesn't show the same information.

But thanks for your suggestion, moving to linux is out of the question for
this client.

Sounds like a vendor driver issue. Not uncommon with NIC utilities. Look for
new drivers or updated drivers for your NIC.

Before you put a problem report into Intel have a look for new drivers. Out
of interest I did a quick check and the drivers for my Pro/1000 XT NICs
have been updated to version 10.1 and, guess what, the problem has gone
away.

Good luck.

Bill,

Thanks for the update.

I actually tried a new driver a while back, 6 months ago or so, and it
didn't work at that time.

So I will try again.
