Viewing JPG with currently-open browser?

I used to have IE set up so that if I launched a JPG file, it wouldn't
spawn a separate instance, but would open the JPG in the
currently-running brower window. For the life of me, I can't find the
right setting to get that behavior back (nor do I know what I did to
break it!).

Could someone please explain that magic to me again?

Thanks & best regards,
John

I should have stated in my initial post that this is IE
6.0.2800.1106/128 bit / SP1 and a bunch of hot fixes. So this KB article
doesn't apply (and didn't work, to boot!)
Thanks for that pointer though. It might lead me to something else.

That article applies to any version of IE. Did you check?

tools>internet options>advanced - check "Reuse windows for opening
shortcuts" maybe?

Don't know, just an idea.

Thanks, Charlie, but that's checked, too.

Probably an excellent idea. I may have overlooked the obvious first step.

I found that setting is sometimes a bit unpredictable - oh well.

Have you ever installed any image viewers and later removed them? I wonder
if it might be something in the .jpg file association that's different.

No, I have what I thought was a pretty vanilla system, Win2K, but using
Mozilla and Thunderbird for a main browser & email/news. I left the IE
association for JPG etc because I'm basically lazy and it seemed to be
working - until recently, of course. Thanks for your assistance.

Well not as if this answers your original question or anything but I
generally install irfanview from www.irfanview.com (downloads via tucows)
because it's a very quick loading system so is suitable for viewing, has
lots of useful options for editing (so you don't need to switch to anything
more elaborate most of the time) and seems able to make sense of formats
(and even some damaged image files) that other programs choke on. I mention
this because I found that once I got used to it it's actually easier.

I guess you could try using open with from the context (right click) menu if
it's available and then check "Always use this program to open this kind of
file) and see if that achieves anything. Perhaps there's some IE parameter
that using which is less than obvious in doing file associations manually.
God forbid that MS should ever include "Features" that are less than obvious
:)

Thanks - this works for me. I was just looking for a jpeg viewer that
didn't annoy me with a window-per-picture.
:D

Well good, but watch the mousewheel... very handy at times but still catches
me out on occasion... :)
