viewing faxes

When I try to view a fax in the MS fax console, adobe
photo deluxe opens and gives this message "could not
open" problem parsing the TIFF. file.

A. How do I correct this so that I can view incoming
faxes?
B. How do I change the software that opens faxes to Word
or something elso?

Thanks,

This problem arises because the other imaging application that you installed
has set itself as the default viewer for TIF files. To view faxes from the
Fax Console, the Windows Imaging and Fax viewer must be your default viewer
for TIF files. You can easily restore that setting in Windows Explorer >
Folder Options. File Types. For most users the command line should read:

"rundll32.exe <drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1"

What do you mean by "neither option works?" What happens?
What version of Office is installed?

First - thanks for your help on this, Russ.

I fully understand and have done all that you say
(including replacing <drive> with <C>). Sadly, this
makes no difference. There are two similar types of file
extension being 'tif' and tiff'. In the file types
dialog, I've changed 'tif' by clicking the 'Change'
button and choosing 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer'.
The default option is 'MS Office Document Imaging file'.
Neither option works.

Similarly, changing the 'tiff' type produces the same
results.

I have checked the existence of the \WINDOWS\system32
\shimgvw.dll file on my system.

So I can not understand why I seem unable to either view
a fax having reverted the file type to the correct app.
and also, not having the 'Advanced' button presented in
the change file type dialog, do I seem able to change the
command line directly as you've suggested.

Do you want me to continue this thread via your email
address by the way? I could post screen shots if that
would help?

Again - thanks for your help,
Tim.

By "neither option works" what I mean is neither 'Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer' nor ''MS Office Document Imaging
file'.

What happens? - well when either of the above is the
associated program to the '.tif' and/or '.tiff'
extension, when I go to view a fax nothing happens.

By the way: I can print the fax(es) I try to view and the
image prints perfectly so I do know that the fax file(s)
exists and is not corrupt.

Tim.

Opps - sorry - I'm using WinXP with Office XP but with
Outlook 2003. See other post for answers to other

Wait a minute. You have an Outlook version that is different from the rest
of your Office apps? Why would you do that? Outlook version must match the
rest of Office.

The reason for that is twofold -

1 Microsoft sell OL2003 as a separate entity without any
advice that this configuratin does not work and why sell
it separately if it doesn't anyway?
2 I didn't want to spend money on upgrading applications
that I didn't need to upgrade as was the case, for me,
with Word, Excel etc. Isn't that why it's sold
separately?

In addition, I can't really believe that doing this
should have a bearing on apps apparently unrelated to
Office being fax console and picture viewing.

If what you are suggesting is true - how can I get my
money back so that can then upgrade the whole of Office?

Best,
Tim.

I don't know why they don't warn you either. They should. It's not that
Outlook won't work, but many integration features with the rest of Office
will not. You cannot use Word as your editor, for example.

The reason that this has some bearing is that in Office 2003, the default
viewer for faxes changes from Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to Microsoft
Office and Document Imaging. There is no documentation of what happens when
only Outlook is installed without the rest of Office, and what happens to
the association for TIF files. If I were you I'd try both to see which
works. Here are the path statements you should use:
For MODI:
"<drive>:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI\11.0\MSPVIEW.EXE"
"%1"
For Windows Picture and Fax Viewer:
"rundll32.exe <drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1"
