I have two operating systems on my PC (A and B). System A
will not boot (inaccessible_boot_drive), but I can boot
from system B. Using system B, I would like to look at
the registry for system A, and use parts of it in system
B. How can I do this? Thanks.

It would be much easier, faster and less messy to run a
repair on System A. Boot off the CD and select "R"epair
when you get to that menu.

Run regedt32, then from the Local Machine Hive, choose Registry|Load Hive.
Then navigate to the location of the hive you want to edit/read. Give it
some tempname (doesn't matter what). Then when your done, move the cursor
back to tempname, then Registry|Unload Hive, Registry|Exit

You will want to check for upper and lower filter drivers as well as
mass-storage control drivers.

When was the last time you rebooted the original instance of the OS? What
changes did you make prior to the Stop 7B.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I tried using the "load
hive" and I was able to look at the registry, but I guess
not all of it? I am trying to find all of the entries for
a program called mapsource, and I know they are there, but
I couldn't find them.

I also have an acsi versio of the registry that I exported
before the OS went bad, and I can see the mapsource
entries there, but I don't know how to take what I see
there and put them into the new registry.

I last rebooted with the old system about a week ago.
What happened was that I got a new PC and (stupidly) tried
to put the old boot disk into the new PC, and it read some
of the new equipment and hasn't worked since. I tried
using recovery console to fix it, bit it wouldn't work, so
I installed a new system so I can at least pull data off
the disk. But ther are some programs, like mapsource,
that won't run on the new disk, I assume because the
registry entries aren't there. But I can't reinstall or
it will cost me $150 to buy the maps again.

Tahnks for the help.

Bob

Those keys are likely in the software hive (software) and or the current
user hive (ntuser.dat). It would be next to impossible to reinstall the
program to your new operating system by searching out, cutting and pasting
those suspected registry keys. At least not without a good registry map of
the application from the application developer. You might give them a call,
I can't believe you would have to pay for the product twice.
