I've created a presentation for distribution on cd along
with the 2003 viewer. When the cd is run the background
music and a sound file won't run, though a linked mpeg
file does work. I understand that the 2003 viewer doesn't
support linked sound files. Is there anyway to get around
this problem so that the presentation can be distributed
in a fully functional form. Thanks.

What version of PowerPoint are you using? There is a known bug in the
PowerPoint 2003 Viewer and audio and video files in presentations created in
PowerPoint 2000 and PowerPoint 97 won't run automatically. And even if
clicked on, audio files won't play over more than the current slide. If
that applies to your case, I would recommend that you use the PowerPoint 97
Viewer (http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/Ppview97.aspx
which does work.

The alternative work around is to open your presentation in PowerPoint 2002
or 2003 and save it. Then the presentation will work in the new Viewer.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that Microsoft needs to
give high priority to this PowerPoint 2003 Viewer bug and fix it now, don't
forget to send your feedback to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

Be sure to provide your "business case" for the fix, letting them know what
the impact is on you and/or your clients, etc.

You know I don't think MS will ever get the whole viewer
thing right....not enough money in it for them to worry
enough about, they just keep releasing buggy programs,
new platforms, and don't worry about people that have
presentations to get out. After waiting ages for them to
release the 2003 viewer, so Powerpoint XP (2002) users
could get the features of PP (XP) to finally work
properly, it still doesn't support linked or embedded
files, tell me what use is that? My whole presentation I
spent weeks on to perfect in XP, won't view correctly on
a NON XP machine using either the 97 viewer or the 2003
viewer. Pathetic MS as usual! Still what can one expect
from a company that only cares for nothing but MONEY!

Yes and no. I think that as a result of user complaints about the lack of a
real 2000/2002 viewer, they get it.
Money? True, a free viewer doesn't bring in any.
On the other hand, if you and I can't distribute PPT files made with the
latest/greatest paid-for update because there's no workable free viewer,
we're that much less likely to pay for the upgrade. MS gets that too. I'd
count on it.

So the drill is to visit http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp
and explain the specific complaints you have with the Viewer, one post per
complaint. Explain why and how it affects you economically. If you can
make a case, from your own experience, for how it may hurt MS economically,
by all means, let it rip.

they just keep releasing buggy programs,

Hmm, seems to work from here, what sort of problem are you having?
