After searching this group (should have done that first, fool) I determined
that it was because I have a shortcut to notepad on my desktop.

Although it's been there practically since I first installed XP on this
machine, and the view source always worked fine until now, renaming it fixed
the problem.

First, clear the Temporary Internet cache:

Also:
1. Delete any shortcuts named "notepad' in the desktop
2. Check for the file notepad.exe in the following paths and delete them:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your user profile>\Desktop\
