I have been unable to stop the random switch in folders
changing from thumbnail to list to icon. Is there any
way to fet a consistent view?

Go into any particular folder and set it up the way you
wish. Then click "tools" and within the dropdown menu
click "folder options", hit the "View" tab, click the box
that says,"Apply to All Folders". That should do the
trick. Hope it helps Wayne B.
 
Hi Claude,

Open a folder. Tools > Folder Options > View > Reset All Folders
Close the folder. Open and customize the folder again. View > Apply to All Folders

If the settings are not saved, try this fix from Kelly:

Windows [XP] remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some
settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding
this edit to the registry.
