In older windows, I believe we could highlight a .doc or .xls and preview the
contents in another window.

Is that available in XP Windows Explorer?

Thanks.

Hi Michael,

If you are using the XP style folders, then a preview is available in the
left column towards the bottom. I don't recall where any previous version of
Windows offered this.

How do I set that? The previews do not show.
I can only see an option to have the folders as links, single click, rather
than double click.

Thanks for the reply.
The menu for the folder does say that common tasks is enabled.
But, there is still no preview window showing what's inside the document,
when selected.

You're telling us what you don't see, tell us what you are seeing?
Is the Common Tasks folder on the left side of the window or do you see the folder tree there? The common tasks is a narrow blue bar that contains menu options.

When you say that "In older windows, I believe we could highlight a .doc or .xls and preview the contents in another window", you may be thinking about the "web view" that was available in folders when viewed in Windows Explorer. This is not an option in XP.

Tools, Folder Options, general tab, has an option button for Show common
tasks in folders, which I have turned on, per the last suggestion.

On the left side, I do have it set up for the folder tree, so I closed that,
and I see the blue bar with file and folder, other places, and details, none
of which offer me to view the contents of highlighted files.

Yes, it would have been win 98 or 2000, but we switched to XP. So, that
viewing is not available then.

Thanks.
