is there a way to get a category view that includes the contacts in
different folders. i have only been able to view a category within each
individual folder. i know that i can search on a category, but that doesn't
allow me to send email to contacts within the category.

If the folders are all in your mailbox or .pst file, you can use Advanced Find.

sue, thanks for the response.

right. as i noted, it is possible to search on a category, but it doesn't
allow me to send mail to contacts found within the search.

i suppose i could cobble a solution together by creating a special folder
and copying the search results to that, and deal with the complications of
having to redo the process each time i use the list so no one is left out,
and issues of synch to pda. but i was hoping there was something more
direct. since there are categories that extend across folders, it would make
sense to be able to access all contacts (including contact subfolders)
arranged by category. (the reason i don't have all contacts in one folder
and separate them by category is that using the contact lists in email is
too unweildly. i just want to pick contacts from a particular folder and not
have to browse through every contact in the system.)

so... i take there is no simple way to see lists of contacts organized by
categories, across all folders.

FWIW, I'd put them all in one folder and just use categories to distinguish them. I can't remember the last time I used the address book to pick a contact from the 2,000 in my Contacts folder. I just type in part of the name and let Outlook try to resolve it.

your memory is better than mine. i often can't think of the names of all the
people i might want to send something to and need the contact list to prompt
me. i guess i could pick contacts from a category list, using the ctrl key,
click on send email. then block the list in the to: and move it to bcc: .
i'll experiment with it. seems like a lot of clicking.
