a little more information is needed. Type of video, version of PowerPoint, OS.
The normal way would be Insert | Movies and Sounds | Movie or sound from file...

I am in the same boat. I am trying to "embed" a video
into a PowerPoint2000 presentation. I need to package the
presentations so that all videos are within the powerpoint
file. My problem is that the "linked" video does not
always go with the presentation when the user takes them
off the network, and out of the office. Thus, bad
presentation, failed contract bid, and no more paycheck
for anyone.

OS:...........Win2K
App:..........Powerpoint2000
File type(s)..mpg, avi, mpeg, wmv, etc...

I am flexable in the file type. I can always rework them
into a type that fits. Thanks for any assistance or
guidance provided.

The only file that gets embedded are .wav files. the remainder are linked.

The easiest way to do it with other files that are going to be used in the
presentation and used on other computers is to put them into the same folder as
the presentation before you make the link. Then make sure they are in the same
folder when you move them to other computers. that way the links will stay
intact.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint does not include the ability to embed (not link) multimedia
formats other than *.WAV audio files.

There are a variety of workarounds to make your presentations with linked
content more portable including:

* Pack and Go (PPT 2002 and earlier), or
* Package for CD in PowerPoint 2003
* Saving presentation in MHTML format (single file web page)
* Converting your audio files in to *.WAV files and embedding them (check
the General tab of the Options dialog to adjust linking threshold for sound
files if necessary).

Of course, If you (or anyone else reading this message) feel strongly that
the option to embed other kinds of multimedia should be a built-in feature
in PowerPoint or that PowerPoint should provide better tools for managing
linked content (such as linked media files), don't forget to send your
suggestion (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).

And whacking the users on the knuckles with a ruler when they misbehave isn't
an option, huh? Nobody lets us have ANY fun any more.

Try Insert, Object, Create From File and dont' put a check next to Link.

When I do this, the movie file's embedded in the PPT. If not, Gates has a
lotta tapdancing to do to explain why a blank PPT file with nothing but a 1.5mb
movie is 1.5 mb when saved. <g>

You might then have to set the action settings for the inserted object to
"Activate Contents" or similar. It'll activate the movie in the system's
default media player app rather than inside PPT, but at least you get a
portable, one-file solution.

I am in the same boat too. I don't think it works. I am trying to create a presentation with a video in it, and it will only play on my computer. Is there software I can buy to fix this? Have you figured it out

Did you put the video in a folder within PowerPoint? How am I to put the
video in a folder, when i have no access to the computer which this video is to
be played on?

If you put the video in the folder that the PPT file is in while you're working
on the presentation, and you insert the video from that folder, none other,
then so long as you keep the PPT and the video together in the same folder, the
video won't have linking problems.

In some cases, you simply can't ensure that this happens, at least not
directly. If you email the presentation or put it on the web as a PPT, then
it's almost a sure thing that the PPT and video won't land in the same folder
together. In that case, ZIPping everything up and letting the user unzip to
the same folder should fix things up.

Have you read some of the other replies, Amy?

Don't the suggestions there work for you? If not, what are the specific
problems you're running into? We can't help w/o knowing what the problem is.
