Videos in powerpoint

I have created several PP slide presentations and most
have video's imbedded in the presentations.
They originally ran as designed when I created them and
for many times after that.
Lately they will not run when the slide comes up. It only
shows the still front picture. Other than that, the
presentations stiill run as designed.
The problem seems to be related to mpg or mpeg files
only. AVI files will run.
I have contacted Microsoft. The tech suggested conversion
to AVI files, but I lack the software to do this and
prefer not to. Since they originally worked, there must
be a way to correct this.
Thanks.
Bob

It's often hard to remember every change that has been made to a system since
something last worked. However, if you have installed new hardware or software,
changes may have occurred that are impacting you. This is very common if you've
had to reformat and reinstall everything, but can also happen if you simply
install the Real One Player. It's very possible that your MCI settings have
been hijacked.

See the information at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm, with special
attention to section 3. Make sure that your MCI settings match the ones listed.

Thanks for the info. My register is different, but I'm
not sure how to correct it.

Editing your Registry is not something to be taken lightly. I would recommend
that you find someone who is comfortable with the process to do it for you and
at the same time teach you how it's done so that you can do it yourself next
time. Without correcting your MCI settings in the Registry, you won't be able
to use your videos in PowerPoint.

I have changed the registry to match, but stiill have the
problem. I do have Real Player installed. I dion,t recall
the sequence of the installation, but I believe it was
installed long before I experenced the problem. The
latest installation is an HP Movie writer which has a DVD
burner and the ability to copy VCR's onto DVD's.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is.

We've been seeing some issues with various DVD hardware and software
affecting video playback in PPT. It may well be that movie writer thing. (Is
it MuVee Audio Producer DVD, by any chance?) See

Would it restore the ability to run videos in PP if I
remove the muvee audio producer software ? Or would
something else need to be restored or reinstalled ?

You were correct about the issues with the MuVee Audio
Producer being the cause of the problem.
By renaming (disabling) three ax extention files, the
problem was solved.
Thanks for your interest.
