Videoplus Codes ?

Has anyone got even the slightest idea how videoplus codes work. How does putting in the number 37 suddenly mean Coronation Street, Channel 3, Monday, 7.30 pm on 8.00 pm off.
Cant find anything on the Internet, no one seems to know but what is much worse is that no one seems worried they don't know.

go to www.radiotimes.com/tv when you click on the program name you get a pop up with the program details and the video plus code is at the top

Yes tried it and you do but I can't see what sort of programming code would transfer all that info across from the remote control to the VCR.
