Hmm... I think that MPlayer2.exe is the WinXP version of the MCI media
player, but I could be wrong. Anyway, it has no edit facilities afaics &
nor does PPT.
Interestingly enough, I've recently been trying to play some MPEG2's in
PPT2002 on my XP laptops - what a lesson in pain! They play fine on both
screens in Media Player; Windows Media Player 9 & InterVideo DVD player
BUT not in PowerPoint! Not in show mode or by double-clicking the file
in Slide View. It just flicks from black to near-black & back again &
then just sits there looking stupid.
In the end I poked around with that lovely little GSpot codec gadget
(nice one whoever suggested it - thanks!) & suspected my DVD player. So
I uninstalled it & sure enough couldn't play the MPEG2's with anything.
Next I trawled the Interweb for freebie codecs - DO NOT DO THIS AT ALL
EVER!!! They're either so poor quality they make your eyes hurt or they
install half a ton of spyware & adware crap that takes days to hunt down
& kill. Or both.
Finally I tried some of the trial versions of the proper codecs & the
best by far was the Moonlight-Elecard (
http://moonlight.co.il or
http://www.elecard.com (as recommended here by Echo, iirc)) which played
fine in PPT on both screens. I then had to pay to have the logo removed
from the corner but it was very reasonably priced (UKP 15.00) & it let
me "try before I buy"ed.
Although the results were better, it was still dreadfully slow with
horrible transitions in & out. OK some of the clips were about 8 mins
long & I appreciate that PPT had to load them up, but even so, it was
nerve-wracking waiting for several long seconds after you hit GO
wondering if you'd actually hit GO or if the bloody thing had crashed
again. Add to that the presenter expecting the video to happen the
moment he pressed the cue light...
Lessons learnt:-
1) When it comes to free software, you get what you pay for.
2) Always thoroughly search this newsgroup a lot - thank you everybody!
3) Israelis make good software.
4) Give up & play the vids back off of tape - this is what we did in the
end and it was so much easier, safer & quicker. And it looked better!
That's the MCI media player, and it's used as the acid test to see if a
multimedia file *should* play in PPT. If it plays in the MCI player, PPT
should be able to handle it.
I note your use of the word "SHOULD" rather than the word "WILL"
Been there, read that, ate the t-shirt...
