John

I need to include video into a pp presentation. However, I
have had trouble editing the clip. I have a 2 min mpeg and
need to play only 30 sec. clips of the whole two min. I
have heard that there is a way to have powerpoint play
only a specific segment of the clip? any thoughts?

Which Media Player is that then? Neither of mine have an Edit menu...

Win XP - MPlayer2.exe & wmplayer.exe

John,

Open the clip in media player (start, run, mplayer)
File > open > open your mpeg clip.

Edit > Selection

Choose the "From " 00:00 and to 00:00"
click Ok
You can also set other options.....(edit > options) such as "display the
play and stop pause buttons" and rewind etc.

Start powerpoint,
Edit > Paste

Done!

Cheers

Hmm... I think that MPlayer2.exe is the WinXP version of the MCI media
player, but I could be wrong. Anyway, it has no edit facilities afaics &
nor does PPT.

Interestingly enough, I've recently been trying to play some MPEG2's in
PPT2002 on my XP laptops - what a lesson in pain! They play fine on both
screens in Media Player; Windows Media Player 9 & InterVideo DVD player
BUT not in PowerPoint! Not in show mode or by double-clicking the file
in Slide View. It just flicks from black to near-black & back again &
then just sits there looking stupid.

In the end I poked around with that lovely little GSpot codec gadget
(nice one whoever suggested it - thanks!) & suspected my DVD player. So
I uninstalled it & sure enough couldn't play the MPEG2's with anything.
Next I trawled the Interweb for freebie codecs - DO NOT DO THIS AT ALL
EVER!!! They're either so poor quality they make your eyes hurt or they
install half a ton of spyware & adware crap that takes days to hunt down
& kill. Or both.

Finally I tried some of the trial versions of the proper codecs & the
best by far was the Moonlight-Elecard (http://moonlight.co.il or
http://www.elecard.com (as recommended here by Echo, iirc)) which played
fine in PPT on both screens. I then had to pay to have the logo removed
from the corner but it was very reasonably priced (UKP 15.00) & it let
me "try before I buy"ed.

Although the results were better, it was still dreadfully slow with
horrible transitions in & out. OK some of the clips were about 8 mins
long & I appreciate that PPT had to load them up, but even so, it was
nerve-wracking waiting for several long seconds after you hit GO
wondering if you'd actually hit GO or if the bloody thing had crashed
again. Add to that the presenter expecting the video to happen the
moment he pressed the cue light...

Lessons learnt:-

1) When it comes to free software, you get what you pay for.

2) Always thoroughly search this newsgroup a lot - thank you everybody!

3) Israelis make good software.

4) Give up & play the vids back off of tape - this is what we did in the
end and it was so much easier, safer & quicker. And it looked better!

That's the MCI media player, and it's used as the acid test to see if a
multimedia file *should* play in PPT. If it plays in the MCI player, PPT
should be able to handle it.
I note your use of the word "SHOULD" rather than the word "WILL"
Been there, read that, ate the t-shirt...

Yes, mplay32.exe (no ER in there) is the WinXP version of the MCI media
player. I think it's also the one in Win2000 and WinNT. mplayer.exe is the
Win98/Win95 version. The MCI media players aren't designed to edit
multimedia, though, which is why you don't see an edit option--or at least
have only very basic options there (auto rewind, auto repeat, etc.). I'm not
sure that those settings would stay with the media file, either.

Yeah, that's probably a codec thing, as you explained below. Since the file
plays in the MCI player, at least you know those settings are okay.

I may have mentioned it, but if so, it was only because Adam Crowley posts
here! He's suggested the Elecard codec a number of times, and I always pay
attention to what he says!
I note your use of the word "SHOULD" rather than the word "WILL"

hehe, yup. PPT and multimedia can be a tricky thing. I'd love to be able to
say "will," but that's just too too misleading! :-)

MPlay32.exe is the MCI player (Microsoft Media Player), even on WinXP, I'm
pretty sure.
MPlayer2.exe is the old Windows Media Player v 6.4 (which still seems to be
hanging about under the hood even though a newer Media Player (Windows Media
Player for WindowsXP v8.xx) is included with XP.

And they wonder why we run in circles nipping at our tails? Sheesh.

Try in MPlay32.exe ... that's what PPT uses, I'm pretty sure.

I'll reply up here to save - or maybe add - confusion...

Wow. This means I have THREE Media Players, not two as I thought!

Mplay32.exe launches a little old-fashioned player titled 'Media Player'
& Help/About gives Version 5.1

MPlayer2 gets a larger but plain 'Windows Media Player' version
6.4.09.1125 - I thought this was the MCI one, but it probably ain't

Pressing the little round 'Simon Says' Icon brings us to the all-
singing-all-dancing 'Windows Media Player' version 9.00.00.3008 we all
know & love/hate/loath/detest

What fun, hail Eris!

Adam should always be listened to most intently as he is truly wise
beyond my years.

Tomorrow I shall try playing & editing (sic) with MPlay32

Many thanks & goodnight

An embarrasment ... no, an aggravation of riches!

Rename the EXE to EXB and I give you odds that PPT will be unable to movie.

Yup. Same here, only I still have 8. AutoUpdate? We don't need no
steeking AutoUpdate.

Amen.
