I am having some trouble connecting my camera to my computer,
I have a jvc mini Dv model GR-DVL 105 and using an on board fire wire
connection
I have gone into the bios and it is all set up properly,
Proseser is an AMD 3500+, 1G ram and using MGI videowave software
Graphique card is nvidia geforce fx5700

I have had it working in another machine
But I can’t remember if it had me on it or xp

Providing the Firewire card shows up correctly in Device Manager and the
connection is good... after you connect the camcorder to the PC and turn it
on and in VCR mode you should hear a 'ding' connection sound... then a box
should launch asking what you wish to do... ie import the files into your
editing program.

Yes it is showing up in device manager but i do not have a box showing and no ding, i know what you mean, will it need a driver fore the camera. could it be the operating system i am using xp home
as far as i know the cable is ok i have had it worcking on my old machine
but it now refuses to worck on that one as well and the only thing i have
changed is the opperating system.i did have me on it before and cant remember
what system i was using the camera on

It should install the driver for the camcorder as soon as it detects it. Of
course it can't detect a device which isn't turned on.

You might also ensure that you are running the camcorder offf A/C power.
Some refuse to let the PC take control of them (which is what happens) if
they're running off their own battery.

If you can, check the camcorder on aother PC. See if it's detected there.
There have been cases where the firewire port on the camcorder has gone
'bad'. And cables that don't connect.

Also if you can, check the firewire port on the PC... this would involve
'borrowing' an external drive (CD, DVD, hard drive) from a friend or
acquaintance and seeing if the PC will detect that drive.

It just helps narrow down exactly where the problem lies.

Or you could just have XP SP2 installed on your computer, and that's
why firewire doesn't work.

Many thanks it turns out that you where correct it was the camera at fault
and the firewire port on the camcorder has gone 'bad'. .is it worth
getting it fixed can it be fixed, many thanks.
Glenwood.

Often repairs can be prohibitively expensive, so it's going to be a case of
check it out and see, then make up your own mind. It cna be done, and will
most likely need an authorised agent of the manufacturer of the cam to do
it.
