Video won't play on Media Player

I have recently downloaded video (and it doesn't matter what the file
extension is.....AVI MPEG WMV etc) and when I go to play it in my Windows
Media Player 11 the only video I get is the visualization that I have
selected in the settings. I hear the audio with no problem....just cannot
get the video. Please, someone, anyone, help. This is driving me absolutely
insane. Thank you in advance for your help.
 
It may be that the video and audio were created using 2 different codecs. As
for what to do about it i am not sure . hope this helps a little.
