I have a Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller 64 Meg. I am
currently trying to replace it with a bigger card. Just that I have a
Gateway that requires a Low Profile/Half Height card. I am finding a few out
there, but seems that the ones in my price range are PCI-E and I need just a
PCI. So those seem to be a little high, or are discontinued. Anyway, I was
doing a little work today and looking at my computer's performance ratings,
and notice that it is a 1. Well, I went to the detailed/Print screen, and
noticed that it showed 0 MB for amount of memory on the card.

Any ideas? I think I got the newest driver there is for it. I had the one
from intel then Vista was crashing, until I let Vista do the upgrading of
the driver.

BTW, I am running RC2 5744. And other then that, Vista is great on my end.

Thanks,

Sounds like your Gateway system uses 'Shared Memory'...you'd have to check
the particular specs on your system (easy to do at Gateway.com) but if it is
shared, you have to allot a given amount of memory, from the BIOS, of your
total memory available.

Ok, I checked in BIOS, and I can't find a thing about shared memory for the
Video. Of Course, Gateway was a wealth of info, on their machines of only a
couple years old...:(
However, I did a check in graphic properties, and this is what it came up as
in the actual INTEL graphic report

Of course, it didn't see it was Vista, But hey what can you say. Epson
still don't support their Devices. However, I did the Performance thing
again, and this is what it says.

Graphics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Display adapter type Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
Total available graphics memory Not detected
Dedicated graphics memory 0 MB
Dedicated system memory 0 MB
Shared system memory 0 MB
Display adapter driver version 6.14.10.3722
Primary monitor resolution 1024x768
DirectX version DirectX 9.0 or better

So, once again, I am confused. Wondering if there is a configuration
somewhere I can get it working. I doubt Areo will work on it, but can't blame
a person for trying to get all they can on their Performance report

Many times, the advertised card, especially internal, may show 64Mb, however
it is a shared memory card.

You can find PCI video cards, however, note that the PCI cards will not
perform near as well as the newer cards will. I believe the nVidia 6200LE
has a PCI sister. Sadly, as far as nVidia, that is about the best you are
going to be able to do.

Wish I could be more help

Shared memory, especially in pre-manufactured cards is set by the bios, and
is usually a set figure, deemed by the maker of the computer and mother
board. Not a lot of help there. With Gateway, you are kida stuck, my best
advice, disable and replace.

Well, I appreciate everyone's help! I have an eye on a few different PCI
cards. I do have a PCI-E card here at the house that I accidently bought
thinking it was a PCI card. I am going to get a different card. I know that
other's are better then what I can get. Just stuck with this PCI slots. I
learned my lesson on buying Gateways. Won't do that again, or at least a
slim Line case..

Thanks! I see many promising cards there. And the sad fact that most are
cheaper then the one I am getting ready to send back to Directron.com.
Especially with the rebates they offer. I appreciate your effort on looking
these up. I know I myself have helped people out finding stuff for their
computers, and I know what a person does to look in to matters, so I
appreciate it a lot.

I am still curious on why Vista would not see anything on my video card that
is built into the Mother Board, but yet the Driver sees it and also tells you
how much is being used.

I just installed a Nvidia 5200 with 256 meg of RAM in my daughter-in-laws
computer. It comes in AGP or PCI configuration. I used, for a while, the AGP
version of this card in my Vista box. Everything worked fine.

This card can be had for under $75.00 (usually a lot less than that).

Well, it is no problem. I am a newegg common shopper. Their prices are some
of the best, and their selection is outstanding.

Again, with the video card, if you look in the WEI view and print details,
you will see under the video card setting you should see your video card
type, and Total Available Graphics Memory.
Below, you should see dedicated graphics, dedicated system, and shared
system memory. If you are using a full shared system you should see your
memory under the shated system memory.

Hope this helps :-)
