Video plays but only shows beginning while audio still rolls

Hi.

Here's my problem:

When I import certain video clips (not all, though) and try to replay them
in the preview window, they supposedly play and the audio runs just fine, but
the video just stays at the first frame, sometimes for the whole clip,
sometimes for 10 seconds or longer. This happens when I put it in my
timeline, too, even if I try to clip it past the beginning, it just does the
same thing from wherever I clipped it.

I've used three computers with WMM and this happened with the first, not the
second, and now it's happening again on my new laptop. I can't make anything
because the clips just sit there on the first frame and it's driving me up
the wall. PLEASE HELP.

I have looked SO MANY places and this problem is never even addressed
ANYWHERE.
 
Edit: I've noticed this only happens with ".mpeg" and ".mpg" files, so far. I
don't know whether changing them to ".wmv" would help or not. Is there some
codec I can download to make .mpeg/.mpg files work better?

Movie Maker is known to have intermittent
issues with certain file types...jpeg, mpeg, mp3...
