Chaos Master

hi.

Is there any video (MPEG/AVI/QuickTime) player for Windows 98, that
doesn't need DirectX, or works with an older version of DirectX?

I would like something more advanced than standard Windows Media Player.

I have the standard DirectX that comes with Windows 98 (DirectX 6.0,
AFAIK) and I don't want to upgrade to DirectX 9, specially considering
that I don't do games.

... I found mplayer at http://www.mplayerhq.hu but I couldn't get it to
work, it tells me that cannot initialize DirectX?

1. NOP - does nothing, increase PC.
2. HLT - does nothing, doesn't increase PC
3. MMX - enter Pentium(r) emulation mode; increase PC
4. LCK - before MMX: NOP ; after MMX: executes F0 0F C7 C8
5. HCF - Halt and Catch Fire"

don't know if you would consider it more advanced but it plays everything I
have thrown at it.

VLC is good but only plays files that it 'knows' about from it's built in
codecs. One must wait till an update is developed before it plays a new codec.
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=5849 or
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=6367 for example.

I installed VLC on a w98SE & XP computer that I deliberately stripped of ALL
video/audio codecs. VLC FAILED to play. Once the codecs were re-installed to
enable media player to work, then VLC worked. This is a known flaw with several
of the development gurus. You MUST have some codecs installed for VLC to work.
It still has hiccups with some divx/xvid variants too.

I am still searching for a STANDALONE video player that will play ANYTHING on
the pc but WITHOUT needing any external codecs...... I've yet to find one nor
do I think one will ever be produced :)

Will try VLC.

I wish I had jo's angel tonight:
But loads of avi files will be Divx...

I know this, but the main purpose (95% of the videos) will be MPEG.

You can't play everything without external codecs. Many codecs are
proprietary and there are problems with patents in some countries.

Yes but VLC performs a good attempt at that end goal. :) There are other
standalone players that others have mentioned too.

A similar aspect to this is Irfanview & the [OT] program called Graphics
Workshop Professional. They both allow viewing ANY picture format without any
other external program requirements. If it can be done for pictures then I am
now beginning to re-think that there is still hope for the video world too :)

IrfanView still requires plug-ins for viewing various image formats...
XnView is much better at this aspect, IMHO.

But it for sure doesn't support WMV with DRM and similar formats.

There are hundreds of graphics formats, IrfanView only supports those that
you are most likely to find.

Hello, Chaos Master;

I have & use Win_98SE, too.

I found Gspot's Video Appliance freeware program has all the video
codecs, i need that are missing.
So far, it has id'ed & played every file type i've thrown at it.

Sorry to say, "Not sure, if it utilizes DirectX."

It's a little hard to work with until you understand it, however i've
have become depend on it's abilities.
I love the Drag & Drop feature for loading video files from my Windows
Explorer file manager.
Hope this will ring the bell for ya!
