Video looks cropped

All of a sudden my Windows XP HE machine refuses to
correctly show video. It doesn't matter what type of video,
DivX, Mpeg(2), WMV, ASF, everything is broken. The video
looks cropped, like all of the sides have been trimmed, and
the rest of the image is resized to fit the original width.
I did install some new nVidia drivers (45.20), but the
problems didn't start immediately after the installation of
those drivers. It took some days of shutting down and
powering up the computer before these problems began. I
rolled back to the 44.03 drivers, but that didn't help.

I already tried installing some codec packs, the Kazaalite
codec pack and the Nemo codec pack, to try if it is some
codec that is broken, but since it is with all file
formats, I think there is something in Windows XP that is
wrong, but what and how can I repair it?

If you have any answers, I would be grateful if you would
send them to my e-mail address and please leave a copy on
this newsgroup, so others may have fun with it.

Thanks,

I had a similar problem. I looked around on the net to see if I could find
any solutions, but none were forthcoming, so I started XP in safe mode -
hold f8 before it gets to the startup screen (with the progress bar) and see
if movies will play then. I found mine did, so I reasoned that it must be
the video drivers, as they don't start up in safe mode. Uninstall the
drivers completely from your system then try making sure that your system is
running on minimal processes when you boot back into normal windows, no
virus checkers or anything like that. Then reinstall the drivers, let it
reboot and see if that helps. It did for me - HTH, Steve.
