Video freezes machine

Whenever I try to play video in either the Windows Media
Player (v9) or RealAudio player (latest version), the
whole machine freezes. Often, the audio continues but the
machine is locked. I mean locked. Nothing works except
pulling the plug. I have all the upadtes, but no go. I
see this is a rather common occurance, but I've not seen
an answer to it. Any clues?

Sounds like the video codec for the file might be severely corrupted, do you
know what it being used to play the files? Do the files play fine in
another machine?

Everything dies. Video online from nascar.com, msn.com,
foxnews.com, clevelandbrowns.com, it does not matter. I'm
sure those things play fine on other machines . . . .

I have the same problem - Windows Media will start and
I'll usually see the 'buffering' message then the system
freezes after a few seconds - audio will play for awhile
(I assume until the buffer runs out) at which point I have
to press the reset button. For what it's worth, I'm
running Win2K sp4, IE5.5sp2 and WM9. I also have Norton AV
running, but that hadn't caused a problem with my previous
version of WM.

Well, as a Browns fan, I know that CB.com is using Real Player for almost
all of their content so thats the problem there <G>.

As for the other sites, does the player log an error? Or does it just die
altogether?

I don't think you understand me. It doesn't matter if
it's Real or Windows Media - the same result. It fires
off the player, buffers some, starts the audio then the
computer totally freezes up. Only turning the power off
and rebooting does any good. Real and Windows Media both
do the same thing.

No I understood that fine, was just making the point that the Browns home
page uses Real. If it does do it in multiple players then I would imagine
its a driver of some sort, try updating your sound, video and directx
drivers if they havent been in a while. Check the application logs as well
and see what kind of error, if any, that Windows is logging.
