Video files saved by WMM have no audio

I am using an HP Pavilion Media Center computer m7570n with its video capture
device Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II Capture. Windows Movie Maker WMM runs on
Windows XP professional. The input is an AV composite video signal with
stereo audio (the capture device provides the appropriate connectors for it
on the front panel). Tried all the different options for audio and video
available within WMM, also had the entire audio system checked, but to no
avail. I get beatuiful video but no audio. After spending nearly a night with
HP online support personnel (from India) on the phone trouble shooting the
case. Veredict: WMM software is most likely corrupted and I would have to do
a complete recovery of my computer (Format the hard disk, etc.) because WMM
(for Win XP) cannot be downloaded from Microsoft separately (it's supposedly
part of Service Pack 2, which is not available either for downloading). The
corruption most likely occurred when I installed InterVideo WinDVD Creator3,
since WMM stopped operating after that (crashed on opening). As soon as I
unistalled the Intervideo software, WMM seemed to be working again (no
crashes), except that the audio interface is now no longer functional. I
should note here that the reason I went back to WMM is because Intervideo
WinDVD Creator 3 did not work at all. the video files generated by it were
all corrupted (only diagonal lines instead of video and no sound). I suspect
that the two video processing software corrupt one another. Now my question:
Would anyone know how to re-install WMM in a machine with Windows XP
operating system, or fix this problem some other way. I really don't want to
do a full recovery unless absolutely necessary.
Would appreciate very much any hints whatsoever.

Have you tried unchecking all the filters in
Movie Maker? Find them in Movie Maker at:
Tools / Options / Compatibility tab.

Maybe the info at the following site will be useful:
http://www.papajohn.org/

For starters...in the left pane...go to...
Import Movie Source Files / Video / Recorded TV.

FWIW...you can download SP2 form the following site:

Download Windows XP SP2
http://tinyurl.com/6ubys
or...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...be-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

I have tried the to remove the filters, but that did not work. I then
restored the default filters. Now I can't even produce any video clip (w/o
audio). I want to try to reinstall XP SP2 which is supposed to contain WMM.
But now I realized that I have already installed XP Sp3 some time ago. Will I
have to uninstall SP3 before attempting to reinstall SP2 (or rather over
installing SP2) because it seemingly SP2 can't be uninstalled. It's not in
the Add/Remove Software list. I thought these SPs have to be installed in the
right order. Any idea on this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Derek

SP3 is in my list in add/remove programmes.
Have you got "show updates" ticked at the very top?

Yes, in deed Win XP SP 3 also shows up in my Add/Remove Software list, Sp 2 does not, nor does WMM. Usually when one reinstalls a piece of software, one should first uninstall the old version. But in this case, I could not uninstall SP2. I did in the meantime uninstall SP3, reinstall SP2 (over the top, as I could not uninstall SP2) and subsequently I reinstalled SP3 fresh. Haven't experienced any problems on other parts (yet!!!). So I think it has gone well. However, it made no difference to the workings of WMM. Now, I cannot get it to capture video consistently. Whenever I get a combination that works, on the next take it won't capture, although I have not changed anything in the setup. On the separate problem of missing sound I believe I have zeroed in on the problem. I wired the AV L and R audio (different type of connectors) to the front panel Mic input instead of the AV inputs and selected the line in/mic in as audio device and Microphone as source in the WMM capture area.
Now whenever I get the system to capture the video input I also get sound. Unfortunately I have no idea why it won't capture consistently. May be it is a hardware problem after all
