In order to import video files into Movie Maker, what format do they need to
be in? Can I capture off of a regular DVD? MPEG2 Files?

Thanks!

No

Only WMV and DV-AVI are assured to be compatible.

If you play your DVD on a DVD player hooked up via a coaxial cable to a
TV/Video capture card connected to your PC you can "capture" (not import)
the signal with WMM

I'm surprised how file movie maker software does not accept .MOV files. This
is one of the most common formats for clips taken with digital cameras.

It would be best if you begin a new
thread when you have a comment /
question that's unrelated to the
current thread.

No version of WMM is compatible
with Apple QuickTime .mov files.

The following article describes
one way to convert them to a usable
format.

Could you say a bit more about 'DV-AVI' files please? I'm fairly
familiar with 'AVI' files. Most of those I've been working with
originated in FRAPS, capturing screen action. Typically the raw files
were enormous, and I compressed them in VirtualDub with the DivX
codec.

I gather my AVI files are therefore not 'DV-AVI' files? Apart from
camcorders, where do DV-AVI files get created? I don't recall any of
my movie/DVD software referring to them.

I understand that my normal AVI files may not be reliably handled by
Movie Maker 2.0? So what do I have to do to them first please?

Any practical advice on this would be appreciated please.

WMM is freeware, MS bundle it with XP,
There is the whole issue of licensing etc.
"DV-AVI" is a type of AVI for digital tape.
So for this example, your DivX compressed
AVI's are not DV tape compliant and would
have to converted. Conversely, WMM is not
compatible with many other propriatary type
AVI's, and so would not be able to import
them, but you may find any number of non-
approved plug-ins that claim to "enhance"
WMM's file type compatibilty, of course at
your own risk.

Thanks. I also found a list of 14 types at PapaJohn's site
http://www.papajohn.org via Import Movie Source Files > Video > Video
Codecs, which I was pleased to see included DivX (the particular form
of AVI I'm using mostly).
