Video editing - fades, audio, titling, etc?

Well, I looked in the archived and have googled but I get players and
simple editors/splitters but nothing that would actually work for
total video editing as far as I can see. The close I came to is this:
http://groups.google.ca/groups?hl=e...S%[email protected]

Specifically, I need to start the ball rolling on what I wanted to use
my TV capture card in the beginning - full-fledged editing to some
degree. That means to me being able to manipulate audio, freeze
frames and have them repeat for a length of time, put small inset of
another video in any corner of the screen, add titles, fade in and
out, and a few other things I can think of right at this moment.

What would be best freeware for this, can anyone advise? I'm not
getting anywhere on my own and video ngs always bring up shareware
products.

I did see Stargate music videos on a site made with Sony Screenblast
Movie Studio and that's the type of thing I'd like to do. I want to
edit TV fitness programs to make my own custom workouts as well as
edit family videos.

Thanks all!

The only one I've ever heard of is the Zwei-Stein Video Editor
<http://www.thugsatbay.com/>

This is one area where I couldn't go the freeware route. I work with
Mpeg2 files, would have had to convert back and forth, and the only
free tool to get me there (a version of VirtualDub) wouldn't keep my
audio and video in-synch.

Since it's not freeware... I won't mention the excellent program that
I finally purchased. But, if you check out the great freeware special
effects engine Wax at <http://www.debugmode.com/wax/> you will see
that it works with the "Studio" I "Edit" with.

Anyone know about the plugins that can enhance VirtualDub. I wish I'd
kept the link, but one forum had a message where one poster hinted
that plugins might give VD more functionality in this regard.

Thanks.

http://neuron2.net/ (look under the "mine" and "other" links in the

Whilst these certainly extend the functionality of VD, I'm not so sure you
will be able to do all the things you mentioned in your earlier
post...Still, it's a start!

You're right. They're plugins, as in filters, similar to what I use
in Paint Shop Pro. No, you're right, these are just to manipulate
colour and pixels in the images and are not movie studio items.

Well, it was worth a shot. I'm going to have to keep looking. It
doesn't look good at this point.

Thanks. I really appreciate the links!

I was looking on the pc plus (www.pcplus.co.uk) downloads section for
something else entirely and I saw a download for a free version of Avid Free
DV. As you can see from the feature list at the link below, it's *very* cut
down from the Avid Xpress DV and Avid Xpress Pro (both pretty expensive)
However, you may find it worth a look. I'm certainly going to give it a
try. Looks like its Mac OSX or Windows XP only. btw.

If you find any other useful free video editing programs, please let me
know. What I'm after doing myself is to be able to mix sections of one
video with another (or others) to be able to make a collage of several
different film clips. Virtual Dub lets you cut and paste frames within the
same clip, but not to paste selections into different ones.

been playing around with Avid Free awhile and I have to say it has the most
dogawful, least unintuitive interface of any program I've *ever* used, be it
freeware or otherwise...On top of that it tries to connect to the internet
each time it runs to show two ads for the commercial versions...My apologies
to anyone who installed this piece of crap based on my earlier post!

If you use WinXP, then Moviemaker2 can do all that. It's probably best
that you see the microsoft.public.windowsxp.moviemaker newsgroup for
more details.
