What do I need to be able to record TV shows from the cable to a DVD on my
P3 800-MHz system?

System currently has a DVD player, CD burner.

Specific recommendations for hardware and software would be much
appreciated!

Thanks,

Bart

I have the Winfast TV 2000 XP expert capture card. You can hook anything
into the back of it and it captures the footage and encodes it to mpeg2
which is required to make the dvd watchable on a standard dvd player. The
quality is great. Comes with remote control. Great buy. Other than that, you
need a video card that has a video-in port. then you need software to
capture the footage and more software to encode it to put onto a dvd. Look
around for a card similar to the one I have mentioned and you will never
look back, trust me.

Im assuming you live in the US.

Any decent TV capture card. Avermedias was the cheapest one Ive seen
that had stereo sound recording but I think capture cards have become
more commodities now and Ive seen some huge rebate deals on and off.
And there are tons of rebranded TV cards by ASUS and many other mass
production firms that are quite cheap selling on various websites with
lots of features. The trouble is - lots of people have unpredictable
problems with TV cards - drivers, incompatiblities so its very
difficult to give a 100% guarantee for anything. The Avermedia for
instance was said to be incompatible with the Radeon though that may
have changed by now.

Ive used really cheapo IO magic cards ($5 and $15 after rebate) which
were said to be rebranded low end Pinnacle cards. They worked OK. And
Im using an older top end Pinnacle card with stereo DBx , remote
control and FM radio. The thing is - you can usually use generic
drivers and then use a variety of third party software. This is where
I notice the most difference. Lots of complaints with various
proprietary drivers and software that come with the cards.

Plug it into the cable S-video connection. Get a S-video cord that
goes from the box to the input of the card. Not all TV cards have
S-video inputs some have only composite + the regular inputs. Most
upper end have the regular coax + S-video and or composite.

All cards come with a variety of capture software and TV software.
Some of the low end cards come with crippled proprietary or crippled
3rd party software.

Some popular 3rd party software - Power VCR II 3.0 among many others.

You can capture it in a variety of formats and resolutions.

Then you can change it if its not in DVD mpeg 2 burnable format with
TMPGEnc. You can use DVD author by the same company to put it in DVD
format and burn it with NERO or EZCD etc.
