Hi Jamie,

MM2 can't capture from the incoming video signal on an MCE computer... see
the Importing Source Files > Video > Recorded TV page of my site. My laptop
is an MCE computer and I've tested various ways of getting the video into
MM2.

I hate to disagree with you PapaJohn, but I have an HP MCE (m376n) and I was
capturing live TV in Movie Maker. Here's the catch:

I've only had the unit a month, so I was installing trial video software
with wild abandon to figure out which software solution I wanted to use. (I
knew SP2 was coming out, so I figured I would just reformat the disc/OS so I
could have an easy install.) I had Ulead, Nero, Dazzle, DivX, and Sonic
products installed as well as Gordian Knot, Windows Media Encoder, DVR 2 WMV,
DVR-Ripper, and who knows what else. Then right before I was going to
reformat I discovered Movie Maker was installed on my PC. I was watching live
TV and recorded some to see what size files it would produce. I also recorded
30 minutes of the Olympics for my children using the 'traditional' Media
Center dvr-ms recording (so it was still operational).

I figured I would just use Movie Maker after I reformatted to make MPEG-2
files. But after the reformat I lost the ability to record (or even watch)
live TV on Movie Maker. Which is why I found my way to your post. I'm such a
novice to MCE that I didn't realize I was doing anything out of the ordinary
when I recorded Live TV on Movie Maker. Otherwise I would have done some file
monitoring to figure out what was going on, so-to-speak.

So it is possible, it just needs the right 'can-opener'.

Hi Miles,

Interesting story.... I put that into Movie Maker's apparent short term
memory. I often see posts from people upgrading from MM1 to MM2 and finding
that they can do something they were doing all along with MM1, thought they
could still do it with MM2 as it worked the first time they tried... but
then can't get it to work after that.

I've written to Microsoft asking what causes this positive short term
memory, which gets ones hopes up. No response yet.

Patrick,

I noticed increased traffic yesterday and at times the menu took longer than
usual to finish loading.... I also revised most of the pages yesterday so it
might have slowed things down....

..... but the link in Miles' post worked for him and me last night, so I
assumed you got in OK.

The activity is still unusually high today. I don't know the reason for the
2-day spurt, but I'd like it to be all those checking out the new terms for
subscribing to my weekly newsletter.
