I have an old presentation that a student did with mpeg video on it. The
video is in the root folder, same as when it was inserted, but it keeps
crashing ppt. 2003 on windows xp.
This worked fine on my old machines with ppt. xp on win. 2k. What is
happening now? I remember setting mci stuff back when we were on win 98se
and ppt. 97. Is this something I have to do on ppt. 2003 when using windows
xp?
How do I do this? What file formats does ppt. 2003 now support for video?
(mpeg, .avi, quicktime)?
Thanks,
Ray

The video runs fine in media player. My mci settings in my registry seem
the same as on sonia's site. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ray

Yes, you need to check your MCI settings. See
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm

After you've read that and made necessary tests and changes, see
http://www.echosvoice.com/tshoot_video2.htm if you continue to have
problems.

Did you try the additional things listed at
http://www.echosvoice.com/tshoot_video2.htm?

Path length might be an issue...

Do you get an error msg when PPT crashes?

Path length doesn't seem to be an issue. I copied the folder with the pres.
and video onto the c drive, root directory and ppt. still crashes.
No error message! Just crashes and asks if I want to send the error to not.

Thanks for testing path-length. It sometimes works! ;-)

Only thing I can think, then, is to update Direct X, and maybe turn down
hardware acceleration. http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm Oh, and
maybe update your video drivers.

As a last resort, you could use Insert/Object/From File, and then PPT will
call up Windows Media Player (or whatever your default media player for that
file type is) to play the video. You'll get the "skin" of the player,
though.

Go to Control Panel - admin tools - computer management - event viewer, it
should show you your crashes. Double click on the error or warning. This
should give some info as to the crash. It might just help, at least you can
then post the info it gives you for more help.
