are there any good freeware packages for vista that install good codecs? in
XP you could install divx and pretty much play any AVI you came across. divx
says they dont currently have a vista version

I am using the free Divx 6.2.

Just install the CODECS - nothing else. They work with Media Player 11.

I have also installed ver 6.4 with the same results.

on the divx site i see the download for the 6,4 version that says it
installs:

DivX Player 6.4
DivX Community Codec 6.4
DivX Web Player 1.2.0

where is 6.2? and does 6.4 let you install ONLY the codecs?

You know, of course, about "custom" installs.

Use it here.

AMOI How do you find the version of Windows Media Player that is
installed (apart from tracking down its .exe file and using
Properties)?

I don't see any HELP or HELP / About on it.

Media Player's Help menu item, About Media Player

Doesn't appear to have one on the copy that came with VISTA as I said
in my query.

AH WMP is VISTA like! Only shows Menu bar if you use ALT or if you
click on one of the icons that are on the default bar -- It looks like
a 3 paned window and popsup Layout Options.

Not very user friendly to hide HELP like that without even a (?) icon.

You can press F1 while in any part of the OS to get Help on that subject.
This applies to most third party applications as well. It has been like
this ever since the MS-DOS days.

True -- but that will not give you access to HELP / About to get a version
number which was the basis of my query

It looks to be a currupt codec that comes with vista. I just stumbled on the
fix on my machine. Try it and let me know.

I did on mine anyway. I went back and found one of the avi files that would
not load and found that it was made with indeo 5.1 video, so on a long shot,
I went and found 5.1 codec. It's a bit tough to load because you have to get
rid of 2 files before you can go backwards and the permission loop is a bit
much. Anyway, Once you get the two files renamed I think one of them is
41_32.ax and the other is 50_32.dll? Anyway, if you try to load the indeo
drivers without removing them first, it will tell you what they are without
any real problems.

Now, after you get back to 5.1, your problem is still there. But hold off on
stoning me just yet.......

Go to intel and download the newest indeo drivers, load them, and voila! I
was fixed and all my avi files started working. What this might mean is that
the indeo drivers shipping out on the disks might have a problem or
corrupution. Somebody do the same fix and lets see where to go from there!

Have a good one!
Dan
