Since I purchased a new Sony PC 2 weeks ago I have not been able to run video
clips, specifically .avi file format. Sometimes the clips appears upon
insert, but upon running in slideshow mode the clip turns into a black box.
Sometimes the clips do not even insert, upon trying to insert them they turn
most of my monitor green or blue.

My first step would to be to see if there is an updated video driver for the
lappie. Being a new machine it's almost a certain bet the driver is out of
date.

Thank you - this led me to lower the video driver acceleration (which I knew
nothing about), but it worked and I'm thrilled - thank you very much!
What does this "acceleration" do? Am I losing any benefits by keeping it low?

See if any of the options here help

If not, I'd grab Austin's PFCMedia. http://www.pfcmedia.com There's a fully
functioning 2-week trial download there.

I don't think you're losing anything, really, especially if the hardware
acceleration turned low actually allows PPT presentations to run as
intended! :-)

Some of your games or other applications may need the extra "oomph" they'll
get from hardware acceleration. Usually, though, they'll turn it back on for
you (or prompt you to turn it on) if they need it.
