I am helping a friend upgrade from a built in graphics card to a pci-
express graphics card. what i am seeing is the cards PCI connectors
and the PCI slot on his Dell computer are reversed.

Mother board: |____|_______________________| I/O plate at back of
computer

Card |_______________________|____| Digital/Analog and
S-video output.

I can't just reverse the card because the I/O would be towards the
inside of the box. Am I crazy or missing something. THe card is for
PCI Express 16X and the computer doesn't specify wether the slots are
1x or 16x etc. would that matter. Every mother board I look at is
the same and every graphics card I see images of are the same. I
don;t see how they fit.

PCI and PCI express are Different, and are Not interchangeable !!.
It sounds as though you have PCI slots, and not PCI express.

For PCI express 16X the keyway slot is close to the PC backplate.
For PCI the keyway is close to the inside end of the connector.
For AGP it's toward the inside edge, but closer to the center of
the connector. Also the motherboard connector types are
color coded. PCIe 16X = black, PCI = white, AGP = brown.

It looks like your friend's PC has only plain PCI slots.

Thanks everyone. The slots are white. I'll tell him he needs to get
a new video card that works with PCI instead of PCI express. Thanks
again.

Good luck to him. PCI video cards are obsolete, so his best bet for
finding one is probably eBay. One slight correction to my previous
post. AGP card keyway slots vary according to the speed of the card.
The one I described is the AGP 4X/8X card. The earlier AGP cards
had 2 keyway slots dividing the edge connector into thirds.

There are some pictures here, for comparisons...

The top slot here is a 1.5V AGP slot, other two are PCI.

This motherboard has all three kinds of slots. Brown is 1.5V AGP,
purple is PCI Express x16, four white slots are ordinary PCI.

If he wants a new one, newegg.com carries 40 at this time.
