Video card related lockups

I'm running XP Pro.

For some months now I've been getting intermittent lockups whenever I
use the 3D functionality of my video card, ie when playing a 3D game
or a 3D screensaver has been activated.

I recently had the desire to get a new (different!) video card (I used
to have an old nVidia TNT2, but I now have an nVidia GeForce3), but
depite removing all the old cards' drivers the PC the machine still
randomly locks up when the video card is being used by the
aforementioned apps.

It also locks up when playing DVDs.

My only recourse is to press the Reset button.

Can anyone suggest what I could do to alleviate this problem or at
least diagnose the exact cause of the fault?

Thanks
Phil

I'm not totaly sure on this one,but if it happens even
after upgrading and completely re installing a new
graphics card, then it suggests that the problem could be
in one of three other places, the OS, motherboard or the
BIOS. the first thing to do would be to enter the BIOS
and select load default settings in order to restore any
changes. If this doesn't fix the problem then it's either
the motherboard or OS. To check the OS, access device
manager and make sure there are no errors in there, also
try downloading the latest drivers from the NVIDIA
website. These often contain patches to fix common
problems.
hope it helps!

I was having problems with my GeForce4 and the problem
seems to have disapeard when I did the following things:

On the taskbar, click on the nvidia Icon and
choose "Adjust Display Properties". Click on "Advanced"
button, and in the "GeForce" Tab, it will automatically
appear a menu at the left where you should choose "OpenGL
Settings". Where it says Performance and compatibility
Options, enable the two options below ("Disable support
for enhanced CPU instruction sets" and "Enable conformant
OpenGL texture clamp behaviour"), and reboot Windows.

This should fix it, but if you're still having problems
then you should go to "Control
Panel", "Display", "Setings" tab, "Advanced" button", and
in the "Troubleshoot" tab, uncheck "write combination".

Did this solved your problem?
