at / watch come up all blurry like, the background on my computer is
the same way.. is like the color is running and its getting very
annoying, and i dont know how to fix it, could someone tell me whats
wrong... if you dont understand what im saying, i could show you a

any chance you could try someone elses monitor, assuming desktop?

yeah i actually did try the monitor i have upstairs, and its not
working.. i just dont understand, i thought at first my video card was
going bad, but the only things that are bad is the pictures and movies,
everything else is looking good

If you think it's a video problem, uninstall the drivers through the control
panel. You can use this tool http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
to clean the remaining junk left over from old installs. Is not mandatory
but is recommended. (make sure to read the instructions and follow them word
for word).
Then either reinstall your existing drivers or download the latest driver
from your video cards manufacturer.

This may sound like a very stupid question, but how exactly can i
figure out what type of video card i have?

device manager will tell you.
Right click my computer clcik properties, then hardware tab then device
manager if your running sp2. If your running sp1 it's pretty much the same.

alright, thanks.. now which one is the video card? (can you tell im
computer illiterate?)

Well, i'll try and figure out which one of the devices in the menu is
the Video Card.. but if someone reads this before i find it, can you
tell me which one it is?

oh jesus...well i un-installed it and re-installed it.. and nothing
happeend, its still crap... so what does this mean? is my video card
just screwed, or does this not have anythign to do with the video card?
Please help

thanks

Uninstalling will just reinstall to same drivers when it is reinstalled.

Rt click Desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced one of the tabs should
give the info on your adapter / video card.
What is it?

Also locate dxdiag.exe, maybe a shortcut in Programs/Accesseries/System
tools, otherwise located in Win/System32 folder. Its the MS Direct X
diagnostic tool, run it and report back

alright i ran that program, and i found the name of the video card for
you as well

its an Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

nothing really happened when i ran the program though, it just made the
screen go blank, and moved my icons when it came back up... but theres
my Video Card, hope that will help you figure out whats wrong with this
thing....

thanks again

I think this is a built in (on the motherboard) graphics controller. This
type of graphics uses you system (ram) memory heavily and therefore is
limited in performance, especially games and video.

There is usually a BIOS setting (AGP Aperture) for how much system memory
you want the graphics controller to use. Typically the AGP Aperture value is
set to 128 MB which take away from the available memory for Windows and
programs. Check your BIOS setting to see what it is currently set to. Also
how much ram does your computer have.

Sounds more likely to be the monitor, to me. Have you tried another
(borrowed, perhaps) monitor?

When you first power up the computer you should see a brief message
displayed (it will vary slightly from one manufacture to the next) that says
"Press DEL to enter BIOS setup", others may not use the DEL key, could be F1
or some other key. When you see this message quickly press the appropriate
key on your keyboard several times (4 to 5 times about once every half
second). If your are successful you will enter the BIOS setup screen
(usually blue in color).

You will the need to navigate to the part of the BIOS that deals with the
AGP size. Note that once your are finished and want to exit the BIOS you
will have at least two choices: Exit without saving any changes and Exit
and save changes. Since you are new to this I would suggest choosing the
first option 'Exit without saving and changes', this way if you accidentally
made a change on one of the many screens you no doubt will navigate, no harm
will be done as none of the changes (intentional or otherwise) will be saved
and the BIOS will remained configured as it currently is.

Once you become familiar with the BIOS options and have found the one (AGP)
we are interested in then and only then should you make a change IF it is
necessary.

Report back what your AGP memory is currently set to in the BIOS (don't make
any changes, just write the displayed value down on paper and choose the
Exit without saving option to exit the BIOS and we will go from there.
