Video Card or System Upgrade?

I would like to upgrade my present GF4 4200 64MB card to a ATI 9800 Pro
128MB but I am not sure if my present system will be the bottleneck for
upcoming games such as HL2, Doom3, etc. I would like to get another year or
more out of my system, so would a new vid card make a difference or am I
just wasting $$$?

System
Intel P4 2.53GHz / 533 MHz
512 MB PC800 RDRAM
GF4 Ti 4200 64MB

Thanks

yeah sure
are you seriously saying because you dont have a 3.0+ CPU you have a bottlenecked system....
9800 pro 8x AGP so if anything your boards AGP may have "a bottleneck?'

i just made the same upgrade...but i have an AMD 2600....The card is awsome
but you really wont see a huge gain in the games that are out now....i
bought it for upcomming games like hl2...but IMHO wait a bit longer until
prices drop a bit more....since you are able to play everything that is out
(i know i could) it is better to wait...prices come down every month you
wait....as far as your system goes..its fine....waitt a few months for the
64 bit processors before your next system upgrade or you will find yourself
doing it all over again. That is my plan.

If you're doing alright with the hardware you have right now (which I still
consider to be OK) and if you are mainly concerned about upcoming games, I'd
wait at least two more months before making an upgrade. Who knows when HL2
will really be released, and Doom 3 won't be out until the spring of 2004.
When you do upgrade, make sure you get at least one gigabyte of memory and
at least a mid-range DirectX 9 video card with 128MB.

HAHAH..yeah. .you'll be fine with that Proc. I upgraded my Ti 4400 to a 9700 pro
and I saw a major difference. I only have a lowly 1.4 old school t-bird. Get
the video card first dude. You're golden.

Hi Rob,

I think the 9800 pro will really be much better for ur present
system... u can play all existing games at 4AA and 8AF, I don't think
u will have to reduce the image quality for the upcoming games
either... except maybe for online games...

Another thing to remember is that next year is the introduction of the
PCI Express bus so all the present cards, mobos, etc are gonna be
pretty much useless... so go ahead and upgrade ur video card and enjoy
it for about 12 months... then u can o/c the video card, cpu etc..

hope this helps
