Hi, I want to buy a new vid card, but I don't want to spend 1000s.
Basically, I want to play recent games such as halflife 2, call of duty
2 etc. at an enjoyable frame rate but not at insane resolutions,
probably at not much more than 1024x768. I don't have a particularly
special monitor either.

Any thoughts?

You don't mention the system so it's kinda hard to say.
PCIe or AGP? How old is the system and what CPU and memory?
Not much point having you pay for a higher performing card
than the rest of the system could support from a
-weakest-link standpoint. If CPU isn't over 1.6GHz, for
example, or if only 384MB or less memory you're really
needing more than just a video card.

The generic answer is a Geforce 6600GT. Find one around
$110 after rebate online. It would be easier if you didn't
make vague comments like "1000s" bur rather, reasonably
specific ones since you are dealing with a specific
situation.

whats your CPU, RAM and how much do you want to spend?

ok
1gig RAM, CPU is a sempron 64 3000. want to spend between less than
US150 on an AGP card, but that is flexible...

Thanks for your help

The main criticism of the eVGA 6600 GT card is an intolerably loud cooling
fan.

not really true, that's just a general situation with most
moderately performing (or better) gaming cards in general.
One might as well ignore whether a 6600GT or something else
for this purpose. You could do a lot of research to find a
quieter fan but in the end they're all short-lived junk and
the best long term strategy is replacing the fan, making the
most cost effective purpose a lower cost 6600GT with some of
the savings applied to the aftermarket 'sink.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a particular VGA cooler that you would
recommend?

On second thought, the whole point of buying a 6600GT today
is that it's very cost effective. Spending more on a decent
aftermarket heatsink for it doesn't seem worthwhile.
Supposedly XFX has one with a quiet 'sink but I know not if
all of theirs do, if they might use different 'sinks as
sometimes models change late into the product cycle. I
suggest relubing the fan periodically, before it starts
making noise or at least immediately when it starts making
noise (the former being better).
