Video Capture crashes Win XP

I have tried to capture video off my Sony TRV-70 camcorder to my PC using a
firewire connection, but every time I attempt this the computer crashes and
reboots after less than a second of previewing on screen what is on the dv
tape. I've tried using both Sonic MyDVD software as well as MS Moviemaker. I
have an E-Machines 2GHz cpu with 512 DDR memory and an 80G HD running
Windows XP home. I assume that this is a not uncommon problem and needs
merely some software tweak, but I haven't found what that might be. And I
know the connection and card are working since the camcorder is acknowledged
and I actually see a brief preview before XP crashes. I 've already tried
running it after reboot with all other apps closed (except maybe antivirus).
Any help would be appreciated.
