I use IE 6.0 and find the video which is played in the browser to be very
poor. The sound is fine, but the video is strange colors. And I cannot
even make out the images. Can someone tell me what I need to change?
Thanks in advance.

Without knowing what the video is, it's not going to easy to determine. Most
likely is that you have an older codec that the one the video has been
encoded with. Unless you know what the video format is, you're going to have
a hard time working it out.

Thanks Dan. I am using a Dell Latitude D610, which I bought only a few
months ago. I am not sure what Codec it uses. The videos I am talking
about are those played by websites, particularly news videos.

To be specific I just checked to see if I could view news videos on the
following news sites and got the following results.

ABC Yes, I could view it.
CBS No, I could not view it.
CNN No, I could not view it.
Fox News Yes, I could view it.
MSNBC No, I could not view it.

Is this data enough to tell you what my problem is and how to solve it?
Thank you for your help.

A codec is not specific to a machine, it's specific to the video format. It
doesn't matter what PC you have.

URLs to exact videos would have helped, as there are many on each site. I
myself have no problems with any of the videos I tried on the site you show
as "could not view it". What version of Windows do you have? What version of
Windows Media Player? Have you installed any old software on your PC? (some
files uesd for video playback may have been overwritten with older
versions).

Thanks for your response and patience, Dan.

I went to http://www.cbsnews.com/ just now and clicked on two of the videos
on the front page and got the following results.

On the right side of the screen there is a video called "Reassessing the war
in Iraq" and it played just fine.
I then clicked the video under the picture of Zarqawi, entitled "Zarqawi was
alive for 52 minutes". The Tresame advertisement played fine. Then the
main video showed 4 heads rather than one and lots of striations.

On the WWW.CNN.com site I clicked the video at the bottom left entitled
"U.S. Marine's side of Haditha" and got a pop-up screen and the video looked
a bit like Infer-red night vision film.

Then I went to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8004316/ and clicked on the
"NBC Video" under the picture of the "Season's first tropical storm brews".
Again, the advertisement at the beginning played just fine. Then the news
video looked like Infer-red night vision film.

I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2 and automatic updates. I am using Media
Player 9.00.00.3344

I cannot think of any old software that I have installed.
Does any of this help in diagnosing the problem?

Thanks again for your help and patience.

I'm running XP Pro SP2 with WMP 10, and have no problems. It might be that
those videos are for reason encoded in a format that only WMP 10 will handle
properly, but it seems strange for those sites to do so. Try upgrading to
10, see if it helps.

Thanks Dan. Apparently these sights do require WMP 10. I did upgrade and
it fixed the problem. Thanks for your help.
